INCREASE IN ONLINE GAMING DUE TO COVID-19 AND ITS IMPACT ON YOUTH’S MENTAL HEALTH

Gaming addiction has been on the rise for a few years, but the Covid-19 lockdown has exacerbated and highlighted the major issues with this form of addiction.

  • Experts say online gaming and gambling addictions are on the rise during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
  • They say the social isolation combined with stress and perhaps monetary concerns are some factors why.
  • Experts say these “process addictions” are usually accompanied by other disruptions in home life or on the job.
  • Although there are no approved medications to treat these addictions, other treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, can be helpful.

Gaming disorder is defined as a pattern of gaming behaviour (“digital-gaming” or “video-gaming”) characterized by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences. As per the health agency, there are five warning signs that you are suffering from a gaming disorder. These are:

1. Gaming becomes the dominant activity

Your life begins to revolve around particular games and you either think about your previous games or anticipate your next game.

2. Impaired control over playing time

No matter how hard you try, you are not able to put a pause on your gaming time.

3. Escalation of gaming despite negative occurrences

Even when you do understand that gaming is wreaking havoc on your overall quality of life, you continue to play the game.

4. Loss of interests

Loss of interests in previous hobbies and entertainment as a result of, and with the exception of, video games.

5. Withdrawal symptoms

You get irritated, anxious, sad or even depressed if you are not allowed to play the game.

Stress and anxiety have become household names now and on top of that the whole COVID-19 situation has made it worse. While anxiety can make your body go through a whole traumatic episode in the form of a panic attack, stress can be pretty harmful for your mental health. This easy to do 4D technique can not only pull you out of your own thoughts but also give you a break from stress.
